Just a reminder that over the next few weeks I will be expanding on 10 topics on how we become more Self-Disciplined and develop the Traits of a Leader?
“In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselves … Self-discipline with all of them came first.”
Harry S. Truman understood that discipline in others was useless to a leader if he had none himself. I believe the Mark of a True Leader and a KEY Characteristic of a strong leader is one that doesn’t require anything that they themselves aren’t willing to do or are doing to pave the way.
In the Direct Selling Industry we are training and teaching others from the minute we meet. People watch what we do and move forward based on what they see. How difficult, fun, rewarding and simple what we are doing is will determine whether or not they want to get on board with us to experience the Fun and Freedom they are looking for. With that in mind, our first responsibility as leaders must be for our own discipline and self-growth. I love when people in our company refer to our business as a “Personal Development Program with a Compensation Plan!” It’s so true. While it may not always be convenient, the truth is that we must first walk the path we want our people to take. Leaders cannot lead people places they have not been themselves.
Our successes tomorrow are based on our activities today. Again Discipline and Determination are Key Characteristics of a Leader. If we lack discipline in certain areas, we must begin today to acquire that discipline. At one level, we simply cannot expect of others that which we can’t produce ourselves. On another level, people are not going to follow someone they don’t respect. And they won’t respect a leader who’s actions are not consistent with his or her words. Our team can only grow as big as the Leader of the team, we must constantly push ourselves to the next level to raise the bar of what we can do and help others achieve and believe in themselves.
I couldn’t agree more that “Leaders fail because of problems within themselves than because of problems brought on by those around them. To be a leader, by definition, we must have followers. And people are only going to follow those in whom they have confidence.”
When we focus on improving self-discipline, we will be improving our ability to lead and providing a very positive model for our people. It is not easy and it won’t happen quickly.
Great leaders don’t let themselves become the greatest obstacle to success. Be a leader today and every day and change the world — and your business — in a real and meaningful way! Bill Webb, Catch Fire Newsletter
